There on Corcovado Mountain, rest the statue that spans 2,300 feet high, Christ the Redeemer. Christ the Redeemer has to be one of Brazil’s largest and most famous artifact. Visitors flying in from the two local airports in Rio de Janeiro look forward to being greeted by this humongous statue. The history behind this statue is quite amusing. Over a century ago, there had been held a contest. To most this contest sounded silly or a fool but not to Heitor da Silva Costa, who won this competition. No one expected to have had this created. According to famous builders, this statue is not actually made out of stone! Though it looks like a stone-like statue, it is actually made out of a concrete building covered in soapstone tablets! Now the meaning of the statue you may wonder about, the statue was made as a “religious propaganda,” to turn back on post World War l. The idea was supposed to be “the sea of godlessness” and Jesus Christ would watch over this popular city. If you are ever in Brazil (specifically Rio de Janeiro) this is a must see to add to your travel experience!
